Description
Pair of White-winged Doves by Debra Martz I captured this pair of White-winged Doves at a favorite Texas State Park of mine, the South Llano River SP during the summer month of August.
The White-winged Dove, originally a bird of desert thickets, has become a common sight in cities and towns across the southern U.S. Its unspotted brown upperparts and neat white crescents along the wing distinguish it from the very common Mourning Dove. In flight, those crescents become flashing white stripes worthy of the bird’s common name.
Their faces are ornately marked with a black streak on the cheek, bright-orange eyes and brilliant blue “eye shadow.”
Scientific name: Zenaida asiatica, ORDER: COLUMBIFORMES, FAMILY: COLUMBIDAE
