Description
Masked Booby - Rare Bird Visitor in South Texas by Debra Martz My husband and I were in south Texas over Thanksgiving week and I saw on Facebook, Birds of Texas, that a Masked Booby had been seen on Pier 19 at South Padre Island. It had been seen there and coming and going to the jetties. It was a no brainer that I must attempt to see this rare sighting as I was less than 2 hours away. After parking and getting all my gear out, I saw two Texas Parks and Wildlife personnel as they left the pier. My bubble burst when they said they had not seen it and were going to check the jetties and a few other piers. But I was already there and decided to take my chances. After about 30-40 minutes, I saw the Masked Booby at the far end of the pier. It was on a lower level and views were not great as it was between the wood railings and posts. Oh well, here is its cute and unique face. Now that it was right there, I wanted it to fly so I could get a full photo...but it outlasted me and didn't fly before I had to leave. BUT the JOY of seeing it at all was thrilling!!
