Description
Yellow-Crowned Night-Heron Plumage Display - The Bow
The males will perform a neck-stretching display for females by slowly raising and quickly retracting their head while at the same time fanning their long shoulder plumes. How fortunate I felt being at the right place at the right time to see this performance in person. I was on the north side of Grebe Marsh when I saw three of these herons fly overhead. Then I made my way around to the west side and could see all three on this old remains of a tree. Two flew in different directions but were still in my sight. The male, looking directly at the one just to my left began this display and as it was stretching back upward and retracting its feathers, the female nearest me took flight and he followed. The third remained on the pond.
Captured in April at the Estero Llano Grande State Park in Weslaco, TX near the Mexico border.
