Description
Black Bellied Whistling Duck Posing by the Flowers by Debra Martz Well, it was really hiding not posing! A Common Gallinule was in the area and had been chasing off the other ducks one by one!
The Black-bellied whistling-ducks were formerly known as tree-ducks. With all of its colorful characteristics (red-orange beak, cinnamon chest &back, hot pink feet...) I have to wonder why they chose its black belly for its name!?!?
Captured along the 3300' boardwalk at South Padre Island Bird and Nature Center in south Texas.
Scientific name: Dendrocygna autumnalis
