Description
South Texas Squirrel by Debra Martz Well I was super excited when I saw this squirrel as I had never seen one this color before this day. Then came the part of trying to ID it....is it a dark rock squirrel, a black squirrel, a melanistic fox squirrel? The more I read on the web and the more images I viewed the more confused I became. One article made me think it's the Rock Squirrel as it was written by Texas Parks and Wildlife and they included a picture of a squirrel colored similar to this one....but all the other Rock Squirrel pictures I viewed are spotted all over as the lower body part is on this one. So, I know I saw it in South Texas, South LLano River State Park to be more precise, so what the heck....I'm calling it a South Texas Squirrel. If you know its real identity, please let me know in a comment! Thank you in advance!

Beautiful photo! I wish they had animal identification apps like they have plant identification apps. Whatever the species, it's Beautiful!

Great capture! I have seen one similar to this in Wimberley, Texas but I was not sure about the actual breed either.
