Description
Old Gunsmoke Movie Set 1955-75 We spent a day sight-seeing on some old back roads in southwest Utah. Another sight-seer was traveling on Johnson County Road this day, going in the opposite direction but we both stopped here to take in what remained of the movie set used in 1955-75 for Gunsmoke and other westerns....and though strangers, we reminisced about the western TV shows and movies and how sad the owners were no longer keeping it repaired. A few more high winds and none will be standing.
Johnson Canyon Road turns north off of hwy 89 east of Kanab and is paved for approximately 18 miles. At the end you have three choices; turn-around and backtrack, go right on a dirt road into the Escalante, or go left on a dirt road that eventually leads to Hwy 89 north of Mount Carmel Junction.

Had no idea Gunsmoke was filmed in Utah. Great find, Debra! This is a beautiful capture of a fading memory of Matt, Doc, Chester, Festus, and Miss Kitty.

loved Matt Dillon and Gun-Smoke; sad to see that the show town site is in ruins; marvelous look at a legendary tv show site and landscape
