Description
Republic Motor Vintage Truck by Debra Martz
A visit or just a drive through Sisterdale, Texas is like a throwback in time! Old buildings being repurposed and all types of old vehicles and equipment are used to draw your attention to a winery, restaurant, bar, the dancehall and other unnamed places.
This is just one of many old vintage trucks to be found in Sisterdale, TX. Parked along the side of the road, in front of an old wooden rail fence and old barn type structures in the field beyond, was this Republic Motors truck. My husband and I found it fascinating, especially when we noticed the wheels with wooden spokes. A walk around it searching to find a make or model, revealed a Republic Motors emblem.
Some research on good ol' Google provided me with the following information and so much more of the interesting history too lengthy to include here. The precursor to Republic Motor Truck Company was the Alma Manufacturing Company, founded by Frank Ruggles, which began producing trucks in 1913 for the Maxwell Motor Company under the Hercules name. Not long afterwards, Ruggles reorganized the company, first as the Alma Motor Truck Company and then (after changing the truck's name from Hercules to Republic) as the Republic Motor Truck Company. By 1918, it was recognized as the largest exclusive truck manufacturer in the world, and the maker of one out of every nine trucks on the roads in the United States. It was one of the major suppliers of "Liberty trucks" used by American troops during World War I.
