Escalante Grand Staircase Route to the Cave of Montezuma - Utah by Debra Martz Just one of the many areas of this huge national monument. At this point a dirt road takes the adventure/fortune seeker to Montezuma's Cave. In 1914 Freddie Crystal rode into Kanab with a map that indicated that Montezuma had secreted his treasures to a cave in this canyon area. Locals pitched tents and began digging. They discovered multiple chambers, side passages, artifacts and petroglyphs but alas, no gold in those White Cliffs. Yet, the legend continues! We didn't get to try and seek our fortune as too much rain had the sand/dirt road in really bad shape.
