Description
The Hammel Museum is the former home of the Illinois Brewing Company in Socorro, New Mexico. Why Illinois when located in New Mexico? It was constructed in the mid 1880's and was first known as Hammel Brothers and Company, the enterprise of brothers, William and Gustav. Their father immigrated from Bavaria to Illinois where he started the original brewery in Lebanon, Illinois, thus the name change in 1887. They produced beer and ale until Prohibition in 1919. It was then converted to a soft drink bottling plant and an ice house, in which the ice house continued until 1950. In addition to the brewing company, the collections of the museum focus on early Socorro history. Being that it is only open the first Saturday of each month, we did not have the opportunity of exploring the museum.
