Description
To see these dinosaur tracks, park near the visitor center and hike to the earthen dam. You will then cross the dam to the far side where you will find an observation deck, boardwalk, a number of informational boards and of course, the tracks.
In 1955, the New Mexico Game and Fish Commission built a dam across Seneca Creek creating Clayton lake. Layers of basalt and shale were blasted away, creating an emergency spillway and exposing soft sandstone to the weathering effects of rain and snow. In 1982, the lake overflowed into the spillway removing the last few inches of sandstone that covered the tracks.
At least 4 different kinds of dinosaurs made these trackways, including both plant eaters and meat eaters. The smaller tracks are those of the meat eaters and the larger are from plant eaters.
