Description
Galloping Goose 5 at Locomotive Water Tank by Debra Martz
When arriving in Chama, NM in September, I spotted a Galloping Goose at the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Rairoad depot. Immediately, we went to the ticket office to see if it would be taking any passengers on a tour. Bingo! It would do a few runs beginning the last week of September and we would still be in town. Bought our tickets and were told to be there at 8am with departure at 8:30am with return at 5:30pm. What we were not told was that the Goose would make multiple stops along the route allowing passengers the opportunity to exit the Goose and take photos! Bingo again! What a bonus. Some stops were to get shots of the Goose at different scenic stops while others allowed us to photograph the steam engine train which was traveling a distance behind us.
The first stop was at the water tank and no, the Goose is a motor system so it did not need water. The water tank is used for steam engines as needed.
Information about the Galloping Goose #5:
In looking for a way to reduce the cost of federally required passenger and mail service, The Rio Grande Southern Railroad built 7 geese in the 1930s. The geese were originally called "motors" as they were converted automobiles designed to ride the rails for small duty tasks. Goose 5 was built in 1933 using a 1928 Pierce Arrow body and a 1936 Pierce Arrow engine. And later it was rebuilt using a Wayne Bus body.
It was purchased by the Rotary Club of Dolores, CO in 1952 and sat on display in Flanders park for 45 years. In 1997-98 it was restored to operating condition by the Galloping Goose Historical Society. Upon completion in 1998, it made its first run in 47 years on the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad.
