Description
Galloping Goose Nearing Windy Point by Debra Martz
It was time to board the "Goose" again and make our way around windy point, the mountain top up ahead. While it may not look like a mountain in this view, Galloping Goose had already ascended about 1800-1900' since leaving Chama at an elevation of ~8000'. Once you round windy point, you arrive at the Cumbres Pass (Colorado) at 10,020' elevation. You might notice what appears as two parallel lines cut along the edge of windy point. The upper cut is the train track, while the lower is the highway. Look for images in my gallery of the views from Windy Point.
About the Galloping Goose 5 : In looking for a way to reduce the cost of federally required passenger and mail service, The Rio Grande Southern Railroad built 7 geese in the 1930s. The geese were originally called "motors" as they were converted automobiles designed to ride the rails for small duty tasks. Goose 5 was built in 1933 using a 1928 Pierce Arrow body and a 1936 Pierce Arrow engine. And later it was rebuilt using a Wayne Bus body.
It was purchased by the Rotary Club of Dolores, CO in 1952 and sat on display in Flanders park for 45 years. In 1997-98 it was restored to operating condition by the Galloping Goose Historical Society. Upon completion in 1998, it made its first run in 47 years on the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad.
