Description
From the railroad track on Windy Point looking down to Colorado hwy 17 which we crossed earlier. Windy Point is located around a curve from Cumbres Pass in Colorado which is at an elevation of 10,020'. This was shot while enjoying a day riding the Galloping Goose #5 (with multiple stops to take photos) on the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic rails which left from Chama, New Mexico.
About Galloping Goose 5
In looking for a way to reduce the cost of federally required passenger and mail service, The Rio Grande Southern Railroad built 7 geese in the 1930s. The geese were originally called "motors" as they were converted automobiles designed to ride the rails for small duty tasks. Goose 5 was built in 1933 using a 1928 Pierce Arrow body and a 1936 Pierce Arrow engine. And later it was rebuilt using a Wayne Bus body.
It was purchased by the Rotary Club of Dolores, CO in 1952 and sat on display in Flanders park for 45 years. In 1997-98 it was restored to operating condition by the Galloping Goose Historical Society. Upon completion in 1998, it made its first run in 47 years on the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad.
