Description
I was lucky enough to be in Chama, New Mexico in Sept, 2016 when this Galloping Goose was making a few runs on the narrow gauge. It was a wonderful, history filled day riding the rails in New Mexico and Colorado with frequent stops for photo ops in the beautiful mountains colored by the autumn trees.
In looking for a way to reduce the cost of federally required passenger and mail service, The Rio Grande Southern Railroad built 7 geese in the 1930s. The geese were originally called "motors" as they were converted automobiles designed to ride the rails for small duty tasks. Goose 5 was built using a 1928 Pierce Arrow body and a 1936 Pierce Arrow engine. And later it was rebuilt using a Wayne Bus body.
It was purchased by the Rotary Club of Dolores, CO in 1952 and sat on display in Flanders park for 45 years. In 1997-98 it was restored to operating condition by the Galloping Goose Historical Society. Upon completion in 1998, it made its first run in 47 years on the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad.

Oh my! A Pierce Arrow underneath all that, how cool (and historic) is that!! I need to put that on my travel list next time I am anywhere close to Chama, NM.

Check the website first. It is housed at a museum in Delores, CO but is taken to a few different narrow gauge railroads in CO and NM a few times a year.
