Description
Land Run of 1889 Marker Route 66 Oklahoma by Debra Martz
April 22, 1889, dawned upon an estimated 50,000 people who surrounded the 2,000,000 acres of Unassigned Lands. It was a day of chaos, excitement, and utter confusion. At high noon, shots were fired or trumpets blared signaling the start in which men and women rushed to claim homesteads or to purchase lots in one of the many new towns that sprang into existence overnight.
Under the Organic Act of 1890, The Oklahoma Land Run of 1889 led to the creation of Oklahoma Territory and ultimately to the formation of the forty-sixth state of the Union, Oklahoma, in 1907.
This East boundary is known as the Indian Meridian, is a true north-south line and used extensively in deeds in most of Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska to this day.
