Description
A Goose is a Goose by Debra Martz ... or is it? I'm a bird watcher and should have known this one but I didn't!!! I have seen them at city parks around lakes and ponds many times so was thinking domesticated. And that much is correct, but which species. I thought this would be a breeze by putting this image in my bird app and viola, would get an instant ID....but nope...nada. So google it was and actually pretty quick to find by searching goose images! Until ones that looked like this had multiple names!!! Chinese Goose was first and I was okay, that's it! Until I clicked on another random image and that site said Russian Goose and then there was the African Goose! Swan Goose looked good to me, too, but then that is a rare large, migratory goose wintering mainly in central and eastern China with a natural breeding range of inland Mongolia, N. China and SE Russia (not here in the USA)! At least I saw where those other names derived and that they were descendants of the Swan Goose. Further research on the world wide web made me aware that people raise these domesticated breeds and there are standards defined in the American Poultry Association's Standard of Perfection!!! Wow, just wow!! So, therefore, a goose is not JUST a goose after-all. So, to the best of my knowledge, this is a male (because of that Knob) Chinese Goose.
Oh, one more thing, this one and several others were making themselves at home and begging for offerings around the lake at Lady Bird Park in Fredericksburg, TX.
