Description
National Monument Sculpture - Rome Italy by Debra Martz
In the heart of Rome stands the National Monument to Victor Emmanuel II (Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emanuele II ), better known as Il Vittoriano. The magnificent marble monument to Italy's first king, Vittorio Emanuele II was designed by Giuseppe Sacconi and work began in 1885 and continued until 1911 when it was inaugurated. The decorative complex is filled/surrounded by marble and bronze sculptures from the hands of over 70 sculptors. Over the left Propylaea the inscription reads "PATRIAE UNITATI" (to the Unity of the Fatherland) and over the right one "CIVIVM LIBERTATI" (to the Liberty of the Citizens). The sculpture in this image is over the top right propylaea...
