Description
The Temple Emanu-El Willemstad Curacao by Debra Martz On December 17, 1865, Abraham Jesurun laid the first foundation stone on behalf of the Jewish community to start the construction of the Temple Emanu-El; its inauguration was on September 12, 1867.
The construction was necessary after the Dutch Reformed Jewish Congregation Emanu-El, separated itself in 1864 from the Orthodox Congregation Mikve Israel. The prayer house was named "The Temple" to distinguish itself from the old synagogue, the "Snoa."
In 1963, there was a reunion in the Jewish communities, and the United Dutch - Portuguese Community Mikve Israel Emanu-El became a fact. On August 9, 1963, the last worship service was held in the Temple; afterward, the Temple lost its function as a synagogue and sat empty for many years. The Temple eventually transferred to the Conservation Foundation Curaçao, with the condition that after the restoration, the Public Prosecutor's Office would be housed in the building which became a reality in August 1999. ©Debra Martz, All Rights Reserved
