Description
It was a lopsided game of Hide and Seek with the Pauraque doing all the hiding and me, along with my husband, working on the seek portion! We had previously seen 2 of these birds in February with a little help from a volunteer birding guide. We returned in May and were told by the state park ranger that no one had seen one in several days. We were determined to find at least one Pauraque on our own. First, I hate to admit, we got lost on the overlapping trail system and couldn't find the area the way we remembered it. But a mere hour or so later we realized the wrong turn we had made earlier and made our way to the Alligator Lake region where these birds have return to year after year. Finally in the right area, we began the search for this bird that blends in so well with the sticks, twigs, dried leaves and ground. To say they are nicely camouflaged is an understatement!! We walked in a crouched over manner, back and forth along the trail, searching through the limbs of the trees and underbrush for a good 40 minutes or more! . We were about ready to give up our search for this bird, which rests on the ground during the day, when VIOLA! Doug spotted her, about 10-12' back from the trail. Next issue was finding a large enough opening through the limbs in which to point my lens without being disruptive. We were pleased with spotting and photographing the one and moved on to looking for other bird varieties...in an upright walking position...ha
