Description
Sydney and Nautical Flags © Debra Martz I saw this sign and the flags spelling out the name SYDNEY at the Joan Harriss Cruise Pavilion while waiting to board the ship.
My husband and I took 8 weeks of Coast Guard classes at TX A&M of Corpus Christi shortly after moving to Padre Island and buying a boat as we needed to understand all the markers and more to navigate safely. Nautical flags made up one part of the classes; they are made with a sequence of 26 flags to represent a letter of the alphabet. There are also ten numbered flags, one answering pendant, and three substitutes or repeaters. When on an ocean or large bodies of water, they may be used as signals such as *S - engines are going astern or * Y - I am dragging anchor, etc. But here, they simply spell out the name Sydney.
