Description
Merchant Mariners Memorial Sydney Nova Scotia 2 © Debra Martz This sculpture on the waterfront recognizes the wartime contributions of the merchant navy. During WWII, Sydney became an assembly port for materials needed for war and was often referred to as the lifeline to Europe. The convoys shipping these materials were often on merchant ships never intended for the open seas. Voyage after voyage they saw dozens of ships go down. For those who survived, they faced hours, even days, on an open board and barrel raft. For thousands of others, there was only the eternal sea.
