Description
Woodhouse's Scrub-Jay by Debra Martz
Just when you think you know a bird and can easily identify it, you get that newsletter from Audubon that the species has been divided. And that's just what happened to this bird which was known as a Western Scrub-Jay until 2016. It appears there were enough ID differences to change to 2 seperate birds; the Woodhouse's Scrub-Jay that is found from Nevada down into Mexico and the California Scrub-Jay found along the Pacific Coast. My first sightings of these were in the high desert areas of New Mexico and then this summer, I sighted several in Texas including this one. More specifically spotted at South Llano River State Park.
Cool Fact from allaboutbirds.org
"Woodhouse's Scrub-Jays have a mischievous streak, and they’re not above outright theft. They’ve been caught stealing acorns seeds and pine cones from Clark’s Nutcrackers."
