Description
From the railroad track on Windy Point looking down to Colorado hwy 17 which we crossed earlier. Windy Point is located around a curve from Cumbres Pass in Colorado which is at an elevation of 10,020'. If you look to the left edge at center you will see the water which is where we stopped for a photo of the Goose and its reflection. This view was shot while enjoying a day riding the Galloping Goose #5 (with multiple stops to take photos) on the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic rails which left from Chama, New Mexico.
About Galloping Goose 5
In looking for a way to reduce the cost of federally required passenger and mail service, The Rio Grande Southern Railroad built 7 geese in the 1930s. The geese were originally called "motors" as they were converted automobiles designed to ride the rails for small duty tasks. Goose 5 was built in 1933 using a 1928 Pierce Arrow body and a 1936 Pierce Arrow engine. And later it was rebuilt using a Wayne Bus body.
It was purchased by the Rotary Club of Dolores, CO in 1952 and sat on display in Flanders park for 45 years. In 1997-98 it was restored to operating condition by the Galloping Goose Historical Society. Upon completion in 1998, it made its first run in 47 years on the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad.
