The large American White Pelican is a winter resident here in south Texas. They usually start arriving in October and most have gone back north by April each year. They are one of the largest birds of North America with wingspans up to 9 feet and weigh around 17-20 pounds though I have read they can reach 30 pounds! In flight, their long white wings and trailing edges are tipped in black. With strong winds today, this group of multiple pelicans on the shore of the Laguna Madre here in Corpus Christi, Texas, seems to think it might be time to make another plan!!!!
