Description
West Spanish Peak - Cordova Pass - Colorado by Debra Martz When you reach the high point at 11, 248' elevation on the Cordova Pass, you will find a parking area. From this point, one can stop for a picnic, pitch a tent in primitive campsites or head out from one of the trailheads. We took the West Spanish Peak trail for a ways but when we came to a "Y" in the trail we went left to the Vista Overlook Trail. Staying to the right would have meant going through the forest / tree line you see here and then making a final 1800' elevation gain to scramble over loose rocky terrain for approximately one mile to reach the summit of the peak at 13,626'. Obviously that part of the trail is classified as difficult and not for the faint of heart...so in other words, not for me :-) But there were beautiful vistas in every direction along the trail I took.
Cordova Pass Road is a mostly gravel road that was built in 1933-34 and is approximately 35 miles long. It is located in southeastern Colorado and runs between I-25 near Aguilar, passes through the San Isabel National Forest on County Rd 46 and connects with Hwy 12 on the Cuchara Pass.
