Description
The Smug Roadrunner by Debra Martz Oh, the self satisfaction this Greater Roadrunner must have been feeling after it outsmarted me!!! I saw it to the left of the road running through the field, then it crossed the road and ran into the area by an observation deck. We stopped the truck and I slowly approached the area. I spent quite some time looking around the deck and across the fields in all directions. Finally, I gave up and returned to the truck....just to turn around and see it proudly standing upon the deck railing!! Hmmm, I think I understand how Wiley Coyote felt at times...at least I wasn't injured as Wiley often was! LOL
The Greater Roadrunner is sometimes referred to as the Chaparral, a member of the Cuckoo family. They are found in the southwestern United States and Mexico, usually in the desert. Some have been clocked at 20 miles per hour.
I captured this image in the Bosque del Apache Wildlife Refuge of New Mexico on an August day.

A great snap of this intriguing cuckoo bird, Debra! Its beak indicates that it's carnivorous and long tail acts a balancing structure while running and preying. Well done! F/L.
