The Intent Ladder-backed Woodpecker by Debra Martz I'm not certain what this male ladder-backed woodpecker had spotted; it must have been a very tasty looking insect! It sat in this pose for several seconds before darting up into the adjacent tree.
Saw this woodpecker at one of my favorite Texas state parks, the South LLano River, for bird watching and in the hot summer months cooling off mid-day with a float down the river.

"Although it is restricted to desert and arid environments in the United States, the Ladder-backed Woodpecker is found in pinelands in Central America.
The oldest known Ladder-backed Woodpecker was a male and at least 4 years, 6 months old when he was caught and released in Texas. He had been banded in the same state."
