Description
Stubby the Northern Cardinal by Debra Martz At first glance when this bird landed, I thought I had a new small redish bird species. But a walk around the tree for a better view, well, turned out to be a young male Northern Cardinal. It appeared smaller because its tail feathers were missing. I don't know what bad luck caused it to lose those feathers, possibly fights the young birds will have in the nest or maybe a bird of prey that was not successful at getting Stubby. Hmmmm... If that's the case, I guess you could say that was good luck! All I know was that a large amount of cardinals came through the trees and field area around our campsite each morning and evening during feeding time. And for the week we were there in August, I saw Stubby everyday. Hope he is still having good luck and a happy life at South Llano River State Park and just hanging out in harmony with the other birds of South Texas.
