Savannah's Gold Dome by Debra Martz Savannah's gold dome has become an icon for the City. Savannah's City Hall, built in 1905, is the most distinctive building in town with its clock-tower topped with a gold dome and a towering American flag. I found of interest the fact that the dome was originally clad in copper but was gilded in 1987. The $240,000 project was a gift from a local philanthropist. Extremely thin sheets of 23-karat gold leaf were applied to the dome, cupola, and clock hands. It has recently been gilded again.
