Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge Oklahoma by Debra Martz Not all of the refuge is like this southwestern section; other parts have nice trails among huge trees and an automobile scenic drive takes you along a number of marshes that attract birds in the migration seasons. But arriving at this otherwordly area gave me the feeling of something from a science-fiction movie. Parts of the salt plains are protected such as this view. But notice the wooden post upper right and that marks a road which you can drive farther out and actually dig for selenite crystals Mid April through Mid October. All of the area is closed the other times for protection of endangered birds migrating and some that nest here. There are two entrances to this area of the refuge; one west of Jet, Oklahoma and the other south of Cherokee, Oklahoma.
