Description
Salt Flats Macro by Debra Martz This is a close, detailed shot of the salt that covers over 11,000 acres of the Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge near Cherokee and Jet, Oklahoma. According to their website, "It is designated as the largest saline flat in the central lowlands of North America." From April 1 through October 15 the public is allowed entry to parts of this acreage for the purpose of digging for the State's crystal; selenite crystals with an hour-glass shape are the most coveted. It's closed to the public during fall and spring bird migrations as a large number waterfowl, breeding birds plus endangered and at risk species stop here for the nutrients and the other assemblage of habitat including a lake.
