Artist's Description
Rosita's Window - Roma Texas by Debra Martz Ramirez Hall (Rosita's Cantina) As with most two story structures, the upstairs was used as residential and downstairs as a business. This building was used as the fictitious Rosita's Cantina in the 1950s film "Viva Zapata".
Built by Portscheller who entered into an agreement with Roma residents to produce salmon and buff-colored sand-struck brick for the buildings of Roma's prominent merchant class. Eventually, he developed techniques for molding brick into intricate classical cornice and frieze motifs.
Historical Marker: "Commercial structure with family home upstairs. On site bought 1872 by Lino Ramirez. Built by architect Heinrich Portscheller (1840-1915), who personally laid brick in fine detail around windows and doors. Three generations of Ramirez family occupied hall."
