Description
Red-eared Slider by Debra Martz Every one of my visits to hike the Eagle Roost trail at the Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge in northern Oklahoma has included spotting plenty of these turtles in the ponds along the way. Some stay still and sun on the logs while others quickly retreat/slide into the water.
This turtle is a subspecies of the pond slider and also goes by a number of names including red-terrapin, red-eared slider turtle, red-eared turtle, slider turtle and water slider turtle. They are native to southern USA and northern Mexico.
It's rather easy to understand where this reptile gets its name with the red stripe around the ear and the way they quickly slide off rocks or logs into the water.
