Description
Pyrrhuloxia at Falcon State Park of Texas by Debra Martz
I saw quite a few of these dapper Pyrrhuloxia around Falcon Lake in January. They are songbirds of the American Southwest and northern Mexico. Closely related to Northern Cardinals, the Pyrrhuloxia is often the referred to as the Desert Cardinal.
Fact from allabout birds.org
"The name "Pyrrhuloxia" is a combination of the genus names Pyrrhula (bullfinches) and Loxia (crossbills). The roots mean "flame-colored" and "crooked," and aptly describe the reddish bird with the crooked bill."

WOW !! What a beautiful bird Debra. We have many northern cardinals on our site but this beauty is a first for us as we have never seen one of these before. You captured this beauty with professional photography skills that show the feather details, the colors of the bird beautifully and the all-important eye so very clearly. VERY well done. L/F

Debra: You are finding the coolest birds! But not only are the images fascinating, but they are captured so beautifully! Your beautiful and identified bird image has been featured by Wild Birds Of The World, a nature photography group. L/F

Thank you, William! Spent two weeks on the TX/MX border of the far southern tip of Texas where central American/Mexico birds find there way over the river....some in only 2 to 4 of the counties of the Texas Rio Grande Valley.
