Description
Pharr Mounds - Natchez Trace by Debra Martz
Mile Marker 286 of the Natchez Trace:
There are 8 mounds in this location; three visible in this image. Though this site was occupied during the Late Archaie era, these burial mounds were built during the Middle Woodland period between 1AD and 200AD. The heights of the mounds range from 2 to 18 feet and are in an area covering 90 acres. Four of the mounds were excavated in 1966 when internal features such as fire pits and low, clay platforms were discovered. In addition, cremated and non-burned human remains were found along with ceremonial artifacts.
While the Park Service allows for the field to be harvested for hay, visitors are asked to refrain from approaching the mounds.
The Natchez Trace is a National Parkway that is 444 miles from Natchez, MS to Nashville, TN. But you can travel it either direction and get on or off at many exits along the way. It's a beautiful drive filled with historical stops and very leisurely which is difficult to find in the way of travel anymore. The speed limit ranges from 40-50 mph on a two-highway. PS: Don't plan to drive it in a day....grab a guide book and stop often to enjoy the history, trails and views!
IMPORTANT: The FAA watermark does NOT appear on printed images; it is for online security only.
