Ostia Antica - Athlete Mosiacs by Debra Martz One of several mosaic floors located within the Baths of Marciana, this room lies adjacent to the Frigadarium and was perhaps a dressing room. Refined skill athletes are represented in poses that mirror the various sport disciplines of the time; athletic apparatus, weapons, and trophies are at the mosaic's center.
Ostia was founded around the 4th century BC by King Anco Marzio and became the harbor of Rome, situated at the mouth of the Tiber. Throughout the following centuries, a flourishing trade and business center developed. Following the Barbarian invasions, the decline of Ostia began when the port was abandoned and became covered by silt over time.
The archaeological excavations undertaken at the beginning of the XIX century have brought the ancient city back to light, a rare witness to 900 years of Roman civilization.

My favorite moments are times spent outdoors. I love bird watching, going on hikes and appreciating nature that is all around us. Therefore, much of my photography involves nature and wildlife. I, also, enjoy traveling and have galleries with images from several states in the USA and a few European countries.
