Description
Orange-crowned Warbler Ready for Departure by Debra Martz This migrating wood warbler is very abundant and one of the first I see arrive in Texas during the winter. It is often referred to as being the fairly plain and dullest of the warblers. How can that be said? On a recent organized bird walk at Falcon State Park the leader talked about the many variation in color and patterns. Over 25 known variations!! In most other species, when obvious variance are noted over time, they will be split into new species...which just makes ID'ing even more difficult! My question is why has this warbler not been reclassified into several different species and even more so, how can a bird with over 25 variance be called dull????

I've seen them at Purgatory Creek Natural area in San Marcos!
Debra Martz replied:
Yes, they are wide spread migratory birds! I need to check out that natural area...have not been to it.
