Description
"Old Town Upton Wyoming"

This is one of those places that you happily stumble upon when driving the back byways. We were staying in Sundance, WY for several days with the main attraction nearby being the Devils Tower! After 2 different days to that wonderful attraction for different hikes, we decided to drive out some of the back roads and were thrilled that we did!

The informative sign at Old Town explained that this site was a re-creation of Iron Town and was made up of several buildings that represent different building styles used in the early days of the community. The buildings were donated by local residents and were refurbished by the community volunteers. There were also buggies, wagons, bobsleds and covered wagons from the early days.

Iron Town was a settlement that sprang up along the banks of Iron Creek in the late 1800's. Though they were known for their terrible tasting brackish water they also were known to have friendly card games, saloons and a restaurant. In the 1890s, the railroad was built here and Iron Towns's name changed to Merino after the Merino sheep that were raised in the area. As the town grew it served as an important railroad shipping point, camp, depot, station and service point for locomotives. The railroad took an active part in the development of the town and in 1902 the named changed again to Upton, after George S. Upton, a railroad surveyor! The name remains Upton today.
