The southern slope of the Acropolis is mainly dedicated to the dramatic arts. Herodes Atticus, the wealthy banker and friend of the Emperor Hadrian, the the 5000 seat Odeon carved into the rock in 161 AD as a memorial to his wife Regilla. Expertly restored, it now provides the setting for the annual Summer Festival of Music and Drama.
