Nescatunga is a small, unincorporated town in Oklahoma that is adjacent to the Great Salt Plains State Park. I drive the narrow road between the two when out bird watching and that was when I noticed an older home had been torn down. I thought it was very cool that they left the fireplace and chimney with a decorated mantle! I will be watching to see if they rebuild a new home on the foundation.
(Side note: Sans Orielle, an Osage Indian, along with other members of his tribe guided Indian Agent Major George C. Sibley and his party from Fort Osage, Missouri, to the Great Salt Plains area of present-day Alfalfa county in 1811.
The Sibley party members are believed to have been the first white men to set sight on the salt plains, which Sibley called the 'Grand Saline' however, the large river running through the plains was known by the Osages as 'Nescatunga' - meaning 'big salt water'.) per Wikipedia
