Description
Miniature Forests on the Edge of Grand Prismatic Spring by Debra Martz
Within the rainbow of orange, brown and red colors, some microorganisms live in communities of thick mats. Like a miniature forest, there are microbes that live on or near the top, similar to a forest canopy, using sunlight to perform photosynthesis to fuel the community. Organisms living deeper in the mat, similar to a forest understory, derive energy from the chemicals produced by the surface microbes. Just like a forest's counterparts, all of these organisms create an ecosystem in the expanse of a few inches depth. (Info taken from my notes from signage along the boardwalk)
