Description
Male Golden-fronted Woodpecker by Debra Martz
The Golden-fronted Woodpecker is a common open-country woodpecker of eastern Mexico and northern Central America and their range cuts a path from south-central Texas just in to southern Oklahoma. They say if you see a woodpecker on a utility/telephone pole that more than likely it will be this species as common places for them to nest are in holes of utility or fence poles and in cavities of trees whether dead or alive. According to Audubon.org, they were once persecuted as a pest because of its excavations in telegraph poles. Despite many being shot in Texas in early 20th century, the current population is stable.
There was a pair seemed to have claimed a nearby pole as theirs, venturing out but returning often. This is the male as it has a red crown which the female lacks. Captured in the tropical zone of Estero Llano Grande State Park in the southern Texas town of Weslaco.
