Lake Quanah Parker - CCC 1935 - Wichita Mountains - Oklahoma by Debra Martz
Lake Quanah Parker is the larger of the lakes I had time to stop, admire and photograph along this scenic drive. I could have stopped with just the closer opportunity for a beautiful vista but decided we should drive on down to the end of this side road. So glad we did, when I walked from the parking lot to discover a marker inset in a large boulder "Lake Quanah Parker -1935- CCC" and this beautiful dam just beyond.
The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was a public work relief program that operated from 1933 to 1942 in the United and was a major part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal that provided unskilled manual labor jobs related to the conservation and development of natural resources in rural lands owned by federal, state, and local governments. The CCC was designed to provide jobs for young men and to relieve families who had difficulty finding jobs during the Great Depression in the United States.
