Hovering Hummingbird Moth by Debra Martz The White-Lined Sphinx (Hyles lineata) are often referred to as the hummingbird moth because of the bird-like size, 2.5 - 3.5 inch wingspan, and flight patterns. It behaves like a hummingbird as it can fly extremely fast and instantly swing from side to side while hovering . It is a species of Hawk Moth , therefore, another name is White-Lined Hawk Moth.
