Description
Great Kiskadee Flycatcher by Debra Martz Great Kiskadees are a treat for bird watchers who visit south Texas—and the birds won’t keep you waiting. I have seen them at a number of birding sites along the Texas/Mexico border, from Falcon Lake to Brownsville. They’re boisterous in both attitude and color: a black bandit’s mask, a yellow belly, and flashes of warm reddish-brown when they fly. Kiskadees sit out in the open and attract attention with their calls and constant to and fro flights. They sit on exposed branches of trees and dart out to catch flying insects or pluck food. They will, also, perch above water, catching small fish like a Kingfisher.
Despite their small U.S. range, this is one of the most widespread flycatchers in the Western Hemisphere. Their range continues from south Texas thru Central America and most of South America.
