Description
Grand Prismatic Spring Yellowstone National Park by Debra Martz Grand Prismatic Spring is one of most brilliant and popular of Yellowstone's many hot springs. It is enormous in size, the largest in the USA and the third largest spring in the world measuring 370 feet in diameter.
It has crazy-bright colors of bands of orange, yellow, and green that ring the deep blue waters in the spring. The multicolored layers get their hues from different species of thermophile (heat-loving) bacteria living in the progressively cooler water around the spring. Because water scatters blue wavelengths of light more than others, it reflects a deep blue back to our eyes when viewing the center.
The high temperature of its water, 160 F (70 C) ensures that the spring is often cloaked in steam. Deep beneath, approximately 121 feet, magma from an active volcano heats water that rises to the surface through fissures in the rocks.
