Golden-fronted Woodpecker Pair - Textured Background by Debra Martz
The Golden-fronted Woodpecker is a common open-country woodpecker of eastern Mexico and northern Central America and their range cuts a path from south-central Texas just in to southern Oklahoma. They say if you see a woodpecker on a utlity/telephone pole that more than likely it will be this species as common places for them to nest are in cavities of trees whether dead or alive and utitlity or fence poles. According to Audubon.org, they were once persecuted as a pest because of its excavations in telegraph poles. Despite many being shot in Texas in early 20th century, the current population is stable.
This pair seemed to have claimed this pole as theirs, venturing out but returning often. The male is on the right as it has a red crown which the female on the left lacks. Captured in the tropical zone of Estero Llano Grande State Park in the southern Texas town of Weslaco.
