Description
Golden-fronted Male Woodpecker at Bentsen-Rio Grande State Park of Texas by Debra Martz
With an abundance of brushlands and open woodlands within the Bentsen State Park, I was not surprised to find the beautifully colored Golden-fronted Woodpecker as that is its preferred habitat. This woodpecker is of Central America and from Mexico makes its way up through Texas and on through central Oklahoma. The red crown, like many woodpeckers, is the marking that identifies this as a male.
