Description
Drifting on the Pond by Debra Martz There were a fairly large number of the Black-bellied Whistling Ducks on the first pond at Estero Llano Grande State Park in south Texas. At the time I was watching, most were on a dead tree out in the middle. This one would perch up above them as if on lookout while the others napped. Then it would dropped down to the water, feed and drift for a bit before retaking its perch as "guard!"
"Black-bellied Whistling-Duck: Breeds from the southern United States and tropical Central to south central South America. It can be found year-round in southeast Texas, and seasonally in Arizona, and Louisiana's Gulf Coast. Rare breeder in such disparate locations as Florida, Arkansas, Georgia and South Carolina. Occurs in quiet, shallow freshwater ponds, and estuarine wetlands and marshes." per www.whatbird.com
