Coal Tipple - Cumbres and Toltec Railroad
The coal tipple (tall wooden structure) is designed to deliver coal to locomotive tenders. It is my understanding, this coal tipple located at the depot in Chama, NM, is the last operating coaling tower for steam locomotives left in the U.S. It was built in 1924.
The round, yellow structure to the back is a water tank. These primarily wooden structures were built so locomotives could take on water while in route. This tank, located in the Chama yard, is a double spouted water tank. The double spout makes it very unusual and may be the only remaining example left in the country. It was built in 1897 and is still used today. The oldest water tank
remaining on the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad line was built in 1893 and is located at Cresco.

My favorite moments are times spent outdoors. I love bird watching, going on hikes and appreciating nature that is all around us. Therefore, much of my photography involves nature and wildlife. I, also, enjoy traveling and have galleries with images from several states in the USA and a few European countries. Any image that might have the Fine Art America watermark will NOT print on the purchased product. Thank you for visiting my online gallery! This is a great shot, Debra. glad to see you made it to our neck of the woods. I was caught in a major snow storm in Chama when I was there last March.
Debra Martz replied:
Love Chama, NM and Colorado. Try to go visit the beauty all around the area on a yearly basis.
